The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) commemorates the 40th anniversary of Media Freedom Day also termed as “Black Wednesday”. This day marks an important day in history as there was an attempt made by the apartheid government to gag three newspapers. As South Africa’s only public service broadcaster we draw great inspiration from this day, as it intensifies our pivotal role as a news and information provider, to ensure that we serve the South African society in a way which news is presented in a fair and objective manner without fear or favour. The SABC’s Acting Group Chief Executive Officer (AGCEO), Ms Nomsa Philiso stated: “As we reflect on the history of this day we are pleased with the focus and effort to preserve the editorial independence of the SABC. We will continue to ensure that the foundation of the public service broadcaster remains as an institution which presents an opportunity to provide a space for freedom of expression, open debate and address social and cultural interests of the broader society.” The SABC’s current editorial policy which is under review, indicates that the organization recognises the important part played by news and current affairs in human, social and economic growth and development of the country. The SABC remains committed to being one of the key institutions in the realisation of democracy in our society. The SABC management also commits to supporting staff members in executing their duties to ensure that South Africans receive news and information which is fair and balanced.
