SABC RADIO STATIONS SCOOP 19 AWARDS AT THE 2020 RADIO AWARDS

Johannesburg, Friday, 17 April 2020 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) welcomes a total of 19 awards and trufm Makhosandile Mpumzi’s honour as a Bright star at today’s 2020 Radio Awards. The SABC’s radio programmes, along with its on-air and behind the scenes talent, were recognised in various categories for excellence in radio programming and these wins speak volumes of the credibility and sustainability of our radio brands.
With this year’s edition of the Radio Awards ceremony being streamed live on the internet by the awards organisers, the overwhelming interest in these awards from the industry and the public demonstrates that radio continues to be a major force on the media landscape.

Ms Nada Wotshela, Group Executive of SABC Radio stated “These accolades are evidence that SABC radio stations remain true to their public mandate while delivering entertaining and relevant programming to their target market which is every South African, young and old, rich or poor. It is no wonder that SABC Radio has continued to dominate the industry and find a permanent home in the hearts and minds of its listeners”. Wotshela added “According to the latest BRC RAMS released in February 2020, SABC Radio currently commands 73.2% audience share, representing a 0.2% increase from the previous year’s market share of 73%”.

Nine out of the Top Ten radio stations in the country belong to the SABC stable with stations like Metro FM and Ukhozi FM, the biggest commercial and public mandate platforms dominating in their respective categories with 4.3million and 7,6million listeners respectively. Their reach and appeal have been instrumental in developing new talent and growing local brands for many years.

The SABC extends its congratulations to all the well deserving Radio awards winners.

MEDIA RELEASE – METRO FM ANNOUNCES 2020 LINE-UP

SABC DENIES SALE OF SABC 3, METRO FM, 5FM AND GOOD HOPE FM

Johannesburg- Monday, 10 February 2020 – The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has been made aware of an article by Inside Politics African Narrative published on 04 February 2020, claiming to have exclusive access to a document titled ‘Repurposing the State Owned Enterprises as Instruments for Economic Growth’. According to the article the document proposes, amongst other things, that government should privatise SABC3, Metro FM, 5FM and Good Hope FM.
Because of the potential uncertainty this information can cause, the SABC believes it is necessary to clarify that it is not intending to sell the assets mentioned in the article and has had no discussions with Government in this regard. As requested by National Treasury and the Ministry of Communications and Digital Technologies, the SABC is conducting a thorough process of assessing all its assets, determining which are core and non-core, taking into account a range of factors including public mandate, licence conditions and financial contribution.

The SABC Board has approved comprehensive assessment criteria for determining core media assets, noting that a core asset is not only a station or channel which contributes to the public mandate but also one which help funds the SABC’s public service obligations. With respect to non-core property assets, the Board has already identified non-core property assets and has drawn up a list of properties for disposal, as required by National Treasury preconditions.

The potential disposal of any of the SABC’s media assets involves a much more complex decision matrix, with factors such as the public interest, the public mandate and the future financial sustainability of the SABC being central to any decision.

In light of the above mentioned factors, the SABC categorically denies that these media assets have been identified for sale.
The SABC remains committed to ensuring that the public service broadcaster fulfils its public service mandate and at the same time striving to be a financially sustainability institution.
