05 February : Kenyan movie makes international film shortlist
Kenyan film Pumzi has made it into this year’s Sundance Festival shortlist. The movie directed by Wanuri Kahiu, who made his name bringing the award-winning movie, From A Whisper, to life, will promote the movie at the famed French festival and compete with over 200 films. The 2010 competitor list had more than 9,000 submissions.
‘Pumzi (‘air’ or ‘breathe‘ in Kiswahili), a sci-fi flick tells the story of a world after World War III, the ‘Water War’, where everyone is stuck in an enclosed community with their movements and thoughts closely monitored. An East African woman dares to defy the odds and flee the community in the hopes of re-establishing and restoring life outside the confines of the walls.
