South African radio listeners should were treated to a late night Friday listening experience unlike anything that has come before when DJ Nutty moved into his 22h00-01h00 slot.
Nutty has already left his fingerprints all over METRO FM since 2005, in his role as a station producer. It’s his co-creations that listeners have learned to identify with through the on-air station ID music and more.
That Nutty has been able to create a soundscape that identifies METRO FM with such ease is no surprise – since he first came onto the music scene more than a decade ago. This gifted individual has lent his creative talents to some of the country’s top artists through his work as an engineer and producer and he has also created some fine music of his own (as heard on tracks like “Simbona Ngothando” which has appeared on several recent compilations).
Nutty got his grounding at Soweto Community Radio station, which he joined in 1995 – in the beginning, doing everything from production to “sweeping the studio floor”.
“It was really good grounding for me because I had always wanted to be involved in music and at Soweto Community Radio we had to do everything,” the 30-year-old recalls.
Eventually Nutty got his own show on the community radio station, and at the same time began honing his turntable skills (learning from the likes of DJ Ganyani), laying the foundation for what remains an essential part of Nutty’s working and creative life: that of a live DJ.
“It was around 1996 that I had a show on Soweto Communtiy Radio and also began hanging out at clubs, hoping that the likes of Oskido and Vinnie would notice me,” he remembers.
They soon did and Nutty began his DJing career in earnest and never stopped – even when he joined CSR Studios as an engineer, working on major album projects including Judith Sephuma’s A Cry, A Smile, A Dance’.
Nutty joined METRO FM in 2005 coming on board as a station producer. “It’s been great creating the station’s ID,” he says. “The presenters give us their brief and we create the appropriate sound to go with that show or specific insert – it gives my creativity a good workout.”
Now Nutty has moved into the forefront on Friday nights with a show that aims to provide an engaging and a not-to-be-missed listening experience for South Africans. Expect a mix of lounge, hip-hop, R&B, house and more music to soundtrack the hours when Friday turns into Saturday, all sprinkled in with Nutty’s personality. Part of his plans is to take the show to the regions where he can engage directly with his audience.
