BAMBO JOHNSON

Bambo Johnson, born Muvhango Masindi, was born and raised in Venda. In 1994 he began studying towards a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and English with the aim of becoming a political analyst. After acquiring his degree Bambo wanted to study his for honours, however, his financial situation did not afford him this. Instead, he became one of the first people to establish a campus/ community radio station called Univen FM. As he grew up he looked up to the DJs of the local commercial radio station—Radio Thohoyandou including METRO FM’s very own Glen Lewis. His first role at Univen was as a DJ, presenting the morning drive show and later, the afternoon drive time show. When he left Univen in 1998, he was the assistant programme manager at the radio station.

After completing his BA Degree and his Teachers’ Diploma in 1998, he came through to Johannesburg where he worked for Voice of Soweto Community Radio Station. He hosted their breakfast slot until he moved on to host Jozi FM’s breakfast slot in March 2000.

METRO FM is a station that Bambo Johnson has always wanted to work for because of the music the station plays and the station’s target market. He sent many demo tapes to various radio stations, and was lucky enough to be called in to work at METRO FM.

The first show Bambo hosted at METRO FM in 2003 was The Weekend Paradise, every Saturday and Sunday Morning between 2 and 6 am. In 2004, Bambo went on to host Nite Pulse every Friday and Saturday between 10 pm and 2am. Bambo now hosts The Crack of Dawn, which airs Monday to Friday between 03h00 and 06h00.

Bambo feels fortunate to have been raised in a family that values education as the route to success. He aspires to someday become a political analyst. He maintains that he has always and probably will continue to have a deep fascination for politics. This does not in any way threaten Bambo’s radio career. He still has a lot to do in radio. He wishes to inspire and educate a lot of people and one day hold a management position within a radio station. This is all in Bambo’s five year plan. One thing to learn from Bambo is that one can always achieve what they dream for, though you may find another path in life, make the best of it and the experience will be rewarded.
