SA hindu community remembers A. Dewani

Members of the Hindu faith community gathered in Rylands in Cape Town to commemorate the life of Anni Dewani.

Yesterday was a year since the death of the honeymoon bride who was found with a gunshot wound to the neck in Khayelithsa.

Her widower, Shrien Dewani, is currently embroiled in an extradition appeal battle and the British courts granted a request from the South African government that Dewani be extradited back to South Africa to stand trial for the murder of his wife.

It is alleged that Dewani was the mastermind behind the murder.
Similar vigils were held in Sweden and in Britain.
Anni Dewani made headlines internationally after her death, but last night, those of the Hindu faith community sent their love and prayers thousands of kilometers abroad to Anni's family in her home country of Sweden.

Similar vigils were held in Sweden and in Britain. Anni's husband, Shrien, is British. A prerecorded message of Anni's father, Vinod Hindocha, was played.

Hindocha said his heart is broken into a thousand pieces but that people around the world had offered their support and condolences.

One man, Zola Tongo, has pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to 18 years in prison in December last year.

In his plea bargain with the state, Tongo alleged that Shrien offered him R15 000 to murder his wife.

Two alleged accomplices, Xolile Mngeni and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, are expected to go on trial in the Western Cape High Court early next year.

The appeal hearing against husband Shrien Dewani's extradition to South Africa will be heard in London next month.
