Cricket Journalist found dead in W Cape

British Cricket journalist Peter Roebuck, who was found dead at his hotel in Claremont, Cape Town, may have committed suicide. " We suspect he committed suicide," says Western Cape Captain Frederick van Wyk.

Van Wyk says circumstances surrounding Roebuck's death were not immediately clear and police will be investigating. The 55-year-old Roebuck was found last night. He was in the country to cover Australia's Test series with the Proteas, which started earlier in the week.

According to cricinfo.com, Roebuck had spoken to police, on his return to the Southern Sun Hotel on Saturday, before he committed suicide. Van Wyk said Roebuck's conversation with police will be investigated.

Roebuck played 335 first-class matches in his career
Roebuck good friend

Gerald Majola, the Chief Executive Officer of Cricket South Africa, said in a statement that South African cricket had lost a good friend.

"He was a fierce critic of South African cricket in the unhappy days of the rebel tours, but he made a personal tour of South Africa after the completion of the unity process and the establishment of the United Cricket Board of SA," read the statement.

Majola says Roebuck had arranged bursaries to allow young players from townships to play club cricket in England.

Roebuck, a former cricketer who captained English county side Somerset in the 1980s, played 335 first-class matches in his career. A print journalist and commentator, Roebuck was born in Oxford, but in recent years had shared his time between South Africa and Australia, living in Pietermaritzburg and Sydney.

Suicide is the most selfish thing. Those left behind have to deal with the WHY & MAYBE IF...even if things get so bad that it seems that there is no way out, u can try again 2moro. Just reach out and ask for help...time realy does heal...

NADEL

It is a very sad story for cricket community, guys like this played a major role for South Africa to be where it is right now. Hope that this get resolved soon as it is not good for SA image considering the Dewali saga. I daerly hope that there is no foul play involved in this one. We do not need this as South Africans.
